30 Best Grilled Cheese Recipes

Is there such a thing as too many grilled cheese recipes?

If you said ‘no,’ you and I are on the same page because I don’t think you can have too many either.

Homemade Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Avocado and Tomato

People can talk about apple pie and hamburgers all they want, but to me, the quintessential American food is a grilled cheese sandwich.

There’s simply nothing better than that.

So, I decided to channel my love for grilled cheese sandwiches by compiling a list – not of 10 or 20 grilled cheese recipes, but 30.

Whether you’re looking for something classic or you want to try something new and exotic like a taco grilled cheese or a baked potato grilled cheese, you’ll find something here that’ll make you smile.

Best Ever Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

1. Best Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Although I’m sure everyone has their own opinions as to what the “best-grilled cheese sandwich” looks like, for me, it’s the classic: white bread, cheddar cheese, and butter.

It’s buttery, crispy on the outside, and full of ooey-gooey cheese in every bite.

I love grilled cheeses just about any way you can make them, but nothing beats this comforting classic.

Whip up a couple and serve them with a bowl of warm tomato soup for an incredibly heartwarming and nostalgic meal.

2. Jalapeno Popper Grilled Cheese

If you’re in the mood for something spicier, try this eight-ingredient grilled cheese instead.

It features three different cheeses – Monterey Jack, sharp cheddar, cream cheese – and bacon!

The jalapenos bring the heat, and the cilantro is clean and refreshing. It’s hearty enough with all of the extra ingredients; that you won’t need any soup with it.

3. Caprese Grilled Cheese

The Caprese grilled cheese has a bright, tangy taste that pairs flawlessly with the rich earthiness of the garlic-butter sauce.

It only takes half an hour to make a few sandwiches, so it’s a great lunch option for the whole family.

4. Short Rib, Caramelized Onion, and Gouda Grilled Cheese

If you’re willing to get started early – about 4 hours early – and put in a bit of extra work, you can combine your love of grilled cheese sandwiches with your love of delicious short ribs.

It sounds crazy, I know, but it’s actually phenomenal.

Between the caramelized onions, tender, shredded rib meat, and gooey gouda, there are plenty of things to love about this sandwich.

5. BBQ Chicken Grilled Cheese

Everything about the BBQ chicken grilled cheese is delectable, but I especially love the garlic butter bread.

The sticky barbecue sauce and tender chicken are pretty yummy, too.

(The Havarti cheese and flavorful garlic don’t hurt, either!)

Okay, I should have just stuck with my original sentence: Everything about the BBQ chicken grilled cheese is delectable.

6. Reuben Grilled Cheese

Why choose between a Reuben and grilled cheese when you can have both?

This five-ingredient sandwich takes less than 30 minutes to pull together and features the salty, somewhat sour flavor of sauerkraut and the less potent tastes of Swiss cheese and corned beef.

If you’re a fan of Reubens, you’ll undoubtedly appreciate it.

7. Taco Grilled Cheese

This remarkable recipe takes the traditional grilled cheese and puts a Mexican spin on it.

You’ll add taco-seasoned ground beef, jalapenos, tomatoes, avocado, sour cream, and salsa.

When I’m in the mood for something super scrumptious but vegetarian-friendly, I use taco-seasoned chili beans instead of beef.

Either way, you can’t go wrong with taco grilled cheese sandwiches. They’re one option that everyone will love.

8. Chicken Quesadilla Grilled Cheese

Here’s another Mexican-themed grilled cheese option.

You’ll keep the cheese, butter, salsa, bread, and jalapenos, but you’ll also add shredded chicken and chipotle hot sauce.

Other than the bread being noticeably different from a tortilla, you’ll swear you’re eating authentic chicken quesadillas.

9. Chicken Parmesan Grilled Cheese

This recipe is chicken parmesan on bread. It features the same crispy-crusted chicken, tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese.

The only real difference is that you’ll slap it between two pieces of bread and get it all nice and gooey.

Trust me; it’s a difference that you’ll appreciate, no matter how much you love original chicken parm.

10. Roast Beef Grilled Cheese

With thin, tender slices of roast beef, your favorite type of white cheese, and tons of yummy, spiced veggies, roast beef grilled cheese sandwiches are easy sandwiches to love.

It also doesn’t hurt that you can make them in 15 minutes or less from scratch.

11. Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese

Sloppy Joes are messy, saucy, and scrumptious.

Sloppy Joe grilled cheeses are the same – only on crispier bread and with lots of gooey cheese added in for extra mess and flavor.

Plus, these take only 25 minutes to make – less if you make your Sloppy Joe mix ahead of time.

With a bit of meal prepping, you could easily have these on the table in 15 minutes or less.

12. Grilled Mac and Cheese

Macaroni and cheese is perhaps one of the few foods that’s as typically American and comforting as grilled cheese sandwiches.

This yummy sandwich combines them both for the ultimate comfort food, and it does it in 10 minutes flat. You can’t beat that.

13. Pizza Grilled Cheese

Pizza grilled cheese sandwiches are a little indulgent, but man, they taste so incredible.

They’re full of stretchy, melted cheese, robust pizza sauce, Italian seasoning, and garlic.

They taste great, and they almost smell even better, so don’t be surprised if everyone in the house is drooling by the time you get them on the table.

14. Grilled Turkey and Swiss Cheese

Everyone loves a classic cheese and turkey sandwich, but they’ll like it even more if you toast the bread and melt the cheese.

It’s like hot ham and cheese but with turkey instead.

It’s flavorful and somewhat herby, and it makes the perfect hot lunch when you don’t have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen.

15. Grilled Ham and Cheese

And speaking of hot ham and cheese… You know I couldn’t leave that one off the list.

With only four ingredients and 15 to 20 minutes, you can have this ready to eat.

16. Philly Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese

This one is less like grilled cheese and more like a genuine Philly cheesesteak sandwich on different bread.

It’s savory, hearty, and overflowing with peppers and onions.

If you’re looking for a hearty dinner for a family of four, you can have these ready in just 30 minutes.

17. Brie Grilled Cheese

Brie is such a fantastic cheese for grilled cheese sandwiches, but it seems like no one uses it all that often.

I’m not sure why – the expense, or the exceptional gooeyness?

Whatever the reason, it’s a lousy reason.

We should all be using more Brie in our grilled cheese sandwiches, and this simple, five-ingredient sandwich combines Brie and mozzarella.

There’s also cooked chicken breast and garlic herb butter on crispy bread. It’s phenomenal in every possible way.

18. Keto Grilled Cheese

If there’s one diet that can’t accommodate the classic grilled cheese, it’s the keto diet.

There are just way too many carbs in whatever kind of bread you decide to use.

Unless, of course, you make your own keto-friendly bread.

It takes a bit of extra effort, but if you’re on a low-carb diet and craving a grilled cheese sandwich, this recipe is the way to go.

19. BLT Grilled Cheese

The BLT grilled cheese is your classic BLT with a grilled cheese, garlic, and Dijon mustard twist. It’s salty and full of garden-fresh flavor.

However, the garlic and Dijon give it a zestier kick that’s unlike any BLT you’ve ever tried before. It’s just as spectacular as all the others, though.

20. Spinach and Feta Grilled Cheese

Spinach and feta always taste amazing together, and this spinach and feta grilled cheese sandwich is no exception.

It’s savory and earthy with just a hint of tanginess from the feta.

You’ll even add a dash of red pepper flakes for some heat, and the whole thing takes only 15 minutes to whip up.

21. Bacon Grilled Cheese

If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to make insanely good grilled cheese sandwiches even more insanely good, I have the answer.

Add bacon.

(Isn’t that the answer for how to make everything taste even better?)

You could also add some pepper jack cheese in with the cheddar. It just gives the sandwich more bite, which is precisely what it needs to jazz it up a little.

22. S’mores Grilled Cheese

Technically, this one is more of a dessert than actual grilled cheese, but you’ll add cream cheese to it, so I feel justified in leaving it on the list.

You’ll keep the crispy, buttery bread, too.

You’ll just add a few extra sweet treats (almond butter, dark chocolate, and strawberries) to make it unbelievably decadent and delectable.

23. Apple Bacon Cheddar Grilled Cheese

Despite the apples and honey, this one is actually a savory grilled cheese option, or I should say sweet and savory.

It features the rich warmth of honey and the sweet tartness of apples with all kinds of spectacular non-sweet ingredients – bacon, Dijon mustard, mozzarella, cheddar, herbs, etc.

If you like your sandwiches with many complementary and contrasting flavors, this recipe is the one you should use.

24. Cheeseburger Grilled Cheese

It’s a burger! It’s a grilled cheese! Wait! It’s… Super Sandwich?

This crazy cheeseburger grilled cheese is definitely one of the wilder options on our list, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less flavorful and delightful than all the others.

It takes a little work to make these, but even so, you should have them ready in less than an hour, and they’ll keep you full all night long.

25. Egg in a Hole French Toast Grilled Cheese

If you’re looking for a protein-packed grilled cheese for breakfast, give this one a try.

It’s a grilled cheese sandwich, bacon, fried eggs, and French toast all rolled into one.

It takes less than 20 minutes to make, and it has fewer carbs than you might expect (though I still wouldn’t call it “low-carb”).

26. Lasagna Grilled Cheese

I’d almost say that lasagna grilled cheese is taking the grilled cheese fad too far, but it tastes so good, so I can’t bring myself to say it.

It has all the comforting Italian flavors of lasagna smashed between buttery, crispy bread. (I add garlic to my bread for additional Italian flair.)

27. Breakfast Grilled Cheese

Here’s another excellent option for breakfast; this one features sausage, eggs, and cheese.

It’s just as yummy as any breakfast sandwich you’d get from Hardee’s, and it takes only half an hour to make four of them.

28. Spinach Artichoke Grilled Cheese

Sitting down and eating an entire bowl of spinach artichoke dip for lunch would be a little silly, but enjoying a melted, ooey-gooey spinach artichoke grilled cheese sandwich is perfectly acceptable.

It’s garlicky, cheesy, peppery, and unbelievably tasty. It has a wonderful texture and smells as good as it tastes.

Packing this for lunch is the perfect way to strike envy in the hearts of your coworkers.

29. Baked Potato Grilled Cheese

This sandwich is really just a loaded baked potato in grilled cheese form.

It has everything you love in a loaded tater – bacon, cheese, sour cream, chives, garlic, and more.

There are even slices of russet potatoes in there!

And it’s all sandwiched between two crispy, buttery slices of your favorite bread.

It might not be the healthiest grilled cheese option on the list, but it sure is delicious.

30. Avocado Tomato Grilled Cheese

Personally, I don’t know how anyone could ever get bored with a grilled cheese sandwich, but if you do and want to tweak it a little, that’s easy enough to do.

Simply add a few slices of avocado and tomatoes to your regular grilled cheese recipe.

It takes practically no extra time or effort but gives it a totally unique flavor.
