Ingredients

  • Lean Ground Beef: Look for a lean/fat ratio of 85/15. It provides enough fat for flavor while keeping the meat juicy without being greasy.
  • Dr. Pepper: The secret ingredient adds a unique sweet and spicy flavor.
  • Unsalted Butter: It creates a rich foundation for sautéing vegetables. Using unsalted allows better control of the overall salt content.
  • Onion, Bell Pepper, & Garlic: This classic aromatic trio provides essential flavor and texture.
  • Tomato Sauce: The classic red Sloppy Joe base. It adds natural sweetness and acidity.
  • Barbecue Sauce: It contributes smokiness and tanginess and helps thicken the sauce.
  • Ketchup: It adds a familiar tomato sweetness and helps create the signature Sloppy Joe consistency.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: It brightens all flavors and balances the sweetness. A little goes a long way.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: It adds umami depth and subtle complexity.
  • Seasonings: Smoked paprika adds smokiness. Salt enhances, and black pepper provides subtle heat. Add optional red pepper flakes for an extra kick if desired.

How to Make Dr. Pepper Sloppy Joes

Just like other Sloppy Joe recipes, this one is quick and easy to prepare.

1. Saute the veggies. Saute the diced onion and red bell pepper in melted butter over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 7-8 minutes. Add the minced garlic. Cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

2. Cook the beef. Add the ground beef and cook for 8 to 10 minutes until no pink remains. Break it apart as it cooks, and drain excess grease if needed.

3. Make the sauce. Reduce the heat to medium-low and stir in the Dr. Pepper and sauces. Season with smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and (optional) red pepper flakes. Mix well.

4. Simmer. Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once the sauce thickens, taste it and add more seasonings if needed.

5. Serve. Fill your toasted buns with the Sloppy Joe mixture, and enjoy!

Tips for the Best Dr. Pepper Sloppy Joes

I’ve included a few tips and variations for those of you who are interested:

  • Switch up the beef. I prefer leaner varieties of ground beef. However, you can use beef with an 80/20 ratio for a richer flavor. You can also substitute ground turkey or pork if you prefer.
  • Chop chop! Finely chop the onion and bell pepper to blend seamlessly with the ground beef. Smaller veggies will create a cohesive, flavorful mixture.
  • Get toasty. Lightly toast your hamburger buns for added texture. Toasting prevents them from getting soggy when topped with the meat mixture.
  • Balance the sweetness and tang. Add a touch more apple cider vinegar or barbecue sauce if needed. Tweaking these ingredients allows you to adjust the sweetness or tang to your liking.
  • Spice (or smoke) things up. If you prefer heat, don’t skip the red pepper flakes! Alternatively, add a dash of hot sauce or cayenne pepper for an extra kick. You can also intensify the smoky flavor with a smoked barbecue sauce. Or add some Liquid Smoke with the smoked paprika.
  • Make them kid-friendly. If serving kids, reduce or omit the red pepper flakes. Opt for a sweeter barbecue sauce to cater to their palates.
  • Have fun with other variations. Use slider buns for a party-friendly version. You can also serve the mixture over baked potatoes, rice, or nachos!

How to Store

To Store: Allow the meat mixture to cool completely. Transfer it to an air-tight container and refrigerate it for 3 to 4 days. Store buns separately.

To Freeze: Place the cooled mixture in a freezer-safe container or resealable bag. Leave room for expansion and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

To Reheat: Warm the mixture in a skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until heated. You can also microwave it in 30-second intervals. Stir between each interval. Use fresh buns (toasted for the best flavor).

Jazz up a classic with these Dr. Pepper Sloppy Joes! The soda brings a tangy, slightly sweet flavor that truly makes Sloppy Joes shine.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced

  • 1 small green bell pepper, diced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 pound lean (85/15) ground beef

  • 3/4 cup Dr. Pepper

  • 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce

  • 2 tablespoons barbecue sauce

  • 1 tablespoon ketchup

  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for spice)

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and red bell pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened. About 7-8 minutes.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
  • Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break it apart with a spatula, cooking until browned and no pink remains. About 8-10 minutes. If there is excess grease, carefully drain it before returning the skillet to the stove.
  • Reduce the heat to medium-low. Stir in the Dr. Pepper, tomato sauce, barbecue sauce, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire. Add the smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. For a bit of heat, sprinkle in the red pepper flakes. Mix everything until well combined.
  • Let the mixture simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes. Or until the sauce thickens to the desired consistency. Taste and adjust seasonings if needed.
  • Spoon the Dr. Pepper Sloppy Joe mixture onto toasted buns and serve immediately. Pair with sides, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use beef with a higher fat content for a richer flavor. Just be sure to drain the excess grease.
  • Dice the veggies uniformly and finely for a cohesive mixture.
  • Toast the buns to make them sturdier.
  • Add more BBQ sauce or apple cider vinegar as needed to balance the sweet/tangy taste.
