What to Serve with Tater Tot Casserole (23 Best Side Dishes)

Wondering what to serve with tater tot casserole? The best side dishes include salad, breadsticks, dinner rolls, and tempting desserts.

Tater tot casserole is a pretty filling complete meal on its own. However, it tastes even better with the right accompaniments.

And everyone loves a good dessert no matter what you serve with tater tot casserole.

After all, what better way to finish any hearty dinner than with something decadent?

Now, let’s get to it! Here’s what to serve with tater tot casserole!

Salads

Light, leafy green salads are the perfect accompaniment to the rich, indulgent casserole.

1. Italian Salad with Parmesan Herb Dressing

This veggie and crouton-packed salad is similar to the one from Olive Garden. (Thanks, croutons, red onions, tomatoes, and parmesan herb dressing!)

It’s a gorgeous, colorful salad with tons of veggies and even more flavor. And that parmesan herb dressing is the best. Make extra, refrigerate it, and use it on everything!

2. Rainbow Summer Slaw

This rainbow-colored side dish is more of a slaw than a salad. Still, it features loads of veggies and a sweet and tangy dressing. So, it’s close enough to a salad for my purposes.

It’s crunchy, dense, and wonderfully filling. Plus, it comes together in 20 minutes or less.

3. Greek Salad

Looking for a salad with a Mediterranean flair? Try this scrumptious Greek salad. It has some of the very best Greek ingredients, including capers, Kalamata olives, feta cheese, and more.

It’s light, bright, refreshing, and filling. And like most salads, it’s highly customizable to suit your tastes.

4. Mexican Street Corn Salad

This simple salad is one of my favorites to serve with tater tot casserole. The robust Mexican flavor pairs perfectly with the cheesy dish.

It also tastes phenomenal by itself. It has all the typical flavors of your favorite Mexican meals without much fuss. It’s budget-friendly, too.

5. Butter Lettuce Salad

Looking for something simpler? This recipe is just the thing. It combines butter lettuce with a few other ingredients for a flavorful salad.

It has a delightfully creamy mouthfeel with bits of crunch from the pepitas and croutons. It pairs well with tater tot casserole but is mild enough to be a side for any dish.

6. Tangy Three Bean Salad

Three bean salad is different from other items on the list. However, it tastes just as good. It’s hearty and filling but with a bright, zingy taste.

It’s also vegan, gluten-free, and packed with protein. Use it as a dinner side or an easy option for your next potluck or backyard BBQ.

7. Southwest Roasted Cabbage Wedge Salad

These tasty cabbage wedges might not look like a traditional salad. But they’re packed with enough Southwest flavor, you won’t care.

They’re a delicious, flavor-packed, and unique way to serve a salad. Plus, they’re aesthetically pleasing.

Serve them alongside any main course, and they’re sure to turn heads.

8. Kale Salad

You can never have too many kale salad recipes, and this is one of my favorites. It’s nutritious, delicious, high in protein, and an excellent source of fiber.

It’s a good offset for the not-so-healthy tater tot casserole.

Of course, the big chunks of halloumi cheese on top might be a little calorie-heavy. But even they serve a purpose. After all, cheese is high in calcium!

Bread and Rolls

Wondering which bread and roll recipes pair well with tater tot casserole? I’ve got you covered there, too!

9. Pull-Apart Cheese Bread

Do you know what goes great with a cheesy tater tot casserole? More cheese!

And this pull-apart bread is more than just cheesy. It features the bold flavors of green onions, onion powder, and garlic powder. Every bite packs a punch.

Honestly, I could eat this stuff by itself just sitting around and watching TV. But it tastes terrific with tater tot casserole, too.

10. Cheesy Breadsticks

Keep the cheese coming with these homemade cheesy breadsticks. They taste great with pizza, pasta, and tater tot casserole.

You can also enjoy them as an appetizer with some rich marinara sauce. They taste incredible either way.

Psst! If you want an easier side, try this recipe for frozen breadsticks in the air fryer!

11. Soft Dinner Rolls

Who can say no to a soft, melt-in-your-mouth, buttery yeast roll? Definitely not me!

There’s something about serving a dinner roll that completes any meal and makes it feel more satisfying.

These pair perfectly with tater tot casserole and any other main dish, for that matter!

12. Texas Toast

I love crunchy, garlicky Texas toast.

And making it homemade is far preferable to the frozen stuff you get at the store. This recipe even lets you make it vegan-friendly!

You can even make cheesy Texas toast by adding a little mozzarella to the top before baking.

13. Moist Cornbread

You can never go wrong with cornbread as a side item, especially when it’s as moist and delicious as this recipe.

It has everything you love about cornbread but isn’t nearly as dry. I don’t know about you, but that’s a win-win in my book.

14. Fluffy Homemade Biscuits

Biscuits are another bread option that always works well. You can pair them with practically anything, including tater tot casserole.

I know what you’re thinking. Homemade biscuits are too hard and take too much time! Not necessarily. These particular biscuits have only seven ingredients.

And they’re ready in less than 30 minutes. Give them a try, even if you’ve never been able to perfect homemade biscuits before. You won’t mess these up.

15. Jalapeño Cornbread Muffins

Want some bread with a bit of a kick? Try these jalapeno cornbread muffins. They’re moist and tender with the perfect amount of heat and green onion flavor.

Add a cup of sharp cheddar for a cheesy finish. They’re the ideal way to jazz up any main course.

16. Hoagie Roll

Hoagie rolls make great sandwich bread, but that’s not the only way to use them. You can just as easily enjoy them as stand-alone bread rolls.

Or slice them open and stuff them with a tater tot casserole filling. Dealer’s choice!

Desserts

Now, let’s focus on the best part of any dinner: dessert! These treats are the perfect way to top off a tater tot casserole feast.

17. Brown Sugar Peach Cobbler

I’m a sucker for an old-fashioned dessert like my grandma used to make. And this brown sugar peach cobbler fits that description perfectly.

It’s rich, sweet, and fruity, with crisp edges and a melt-in-your-mouth crust. Enjoy it by itself or with a scoop of cold vanilla ice cream. You’ll definitely want to come back for more.

18. Butterscotch Pudding

I love rich, delicious desserts that don’t require a lot of time.

This butterscotch pudding is the perfect example. It’s silky smooth and overflowing with decadent butterscotch flavor.

However, it requires only 5 minutes of prep work and another 20 minutes to cook. You can whip it up while your tater tot casserole is baking.

19. Mini Blueberry Angel Food Cake

Mini or not, angel food cake is always a crowd favorite. It tastes even better with a whipped blueberry topping. It’s sweet, tropical, fruity, and absolutely divine.

Plus, it has that same great spongy angel food cake texture we all love.

20. Soft Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

Soft, homemade cookies are a universally loved after-dinner treat. And these are the best of both worlds: peanut butter and chocolate chip.

They’re richly warm and sweet and have plenty of ooey-gooey chocolate chips. And for from-scratch cookies, they’re surprisingly easy to make!

You only need 8 ingredients and about 30 minutes.

21. Chocolate Cream Pie

In the mood for something a bit more decadent? You have to try this chocolate cream pie. It features a silky, luscious filling, a crumbly cookie crust, and a fluffy Cool Whip topping.

It has a double dose of chocolate and is about as indulgent as a dessert can be. But despite that, you can easily pull it together with just five simple ingredients.

22. Fruit Salad

Now, let’s look at the other side of the dessert spectrum. You know, one that’s healthier like this colorful, juicy, tart-n-tangy fruit salad.

It’s a gorgeous treat with just about any fruit you could imagine. It has everything from grapes and strawberries to Mandarin oranges and pineapple.

The tangy dressing brings the salad together, so don’t forget that!

23. Apple Bundt Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

Let’s wrap this up with one of my old-fashioned favorites. Apple bundt cake with cream cheese frosting is an impossible dessert to resist.

It’s rich, gently spiced, and full of apple goodness. It’s also moist with a tender crumb and indulgent cream cheese frosting.

If you’re serving tater tot casserole in the fall, it’s the obvious dessert choice.
