Once I made these Homemade Sloppy Joes I knew there was no turning back—the canned stuff can’t compete!
The juicy ground beef is dripping with the most deliciously bold, sweet-tangy sauce, piled high on a toasty bun.
With every bite, I’m hit with a wave of nostalgia—messy hands, big bites, and irresistible meaty goodness—and maximum flavor. The real magic, though, is in my secret sauce.
The combo of BBQ sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire, and brown sugar creates a deep, smoky-sweet flavor. I love how it clings to every morsel.
And the best part? It’s ready in just 30 minutes with simple, affordable ingredients.
Every time I make this quick weeknight dinner, my family practically licks their plates clean. One saucy, satisfying bite and you’ll instantly see why—it’s irresistible!

Ingredients for Homemade Sloppy Joes
- Ground Beef: I prefer lean ground beef (85/15) for less grease, but a higher fat content works too. Be sure to drain any excess liquid after cooking. For an even leaner version, try ground turkey.
- Onion: I recommend using yellow onion. It adds depth and a touch of sweetness to complement the beef.
- Bell Pepper: I prefer green bell pepper for the slightly bitter, savory flavor. You can also use red bell pepper for a sweeter flavor.
- Ketchup and Mustard: This dynamic duo adds a ton of complexity! Ketchup is sweet and tangy while the yellow mustard is tangy and slightly sharp. I recommend using all-natural or organic to avoid high-fructose corn syrup.
- Barbecue Sauce: Adds a bold, smoky-sweet tanginess that’s hard to resist! Use your favorite barbecue sauce for the ultimate flavor.
- Worcestershire Sauce: Deepens the savory, umami flavor of the beef. Lea or Perrins are the brands I use, but use whatever you have on hand.
- Brown Sugar: The sweetness balances the tangy, smoky flavors. I find a few tablespoons hit that perfect sweet spot, but feel free to adjust to taste.
- Seasonings: A simple blend of garlic powder, salt, and black pepper enhances the flavor of the meat.
- Buns: Hamburger buns are classic. Brioche or pretzel buns work too. Either way, I toast and butter the bread for the best Sloppy Joe sandwiches ever!

How to Make Sloppy Joes
These aren’t your lunch lady’s Sloppy Joes! With a sweet-tangy homemade sauce and quality ground beef, this childhood classic gets a well-deserved upgrade. And, it’s almost as easy as popping open a can—but tastes so much better!
1. Cook the beef mixture. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef, onion, and green pepper until the meat is cooked and the veggies are softened. Drain any excess grease.
2. Build the sauce. Add the garlic powder, mustard, ketchup, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar to the meat mixture. Mix well.
3. Simmer. Simmer the saucy meat mixture for about 30 minutes until thick. Season with a little salt and ground black pepper.
4. Serve. Spoon the meat mixture onto buttered, toasted hamburger buns. Serve warm.
Tips For the Best Homemade Sloppy Joes
Here are my top tips and tricks for elevating this Sloppy Joes recipe:
- Brown the beef first. For a nice crusty edge like a burger, brown the ground beef on high heat. Set aside, then saute the onion and green pepper until tender.
- Babysit that sauce. I watch the sauce as it cooks to get a nice, thick mixture. Reduce the sauce too much and you’ll end up with dry meat.
- Fix a dry sauce. Is your sauce too dry? I’ve got solutions! Try adding more BBQ sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, or water. Start with a tablespoon, adding more as needed.
- Sneak in veggies. Try veggies like carrots, zucchini, and sun-dried tomatoes for additional flavor and texture. I promise your kids won’t even notice!
- Get extra saucy. If you prefer even saucier Sloppy Joes, you can add canned tomato sauce to the cooked ground beef. For an even more robust flavor, add tomato paste.
- Make ‘em spicy. When I’m in the mood for spicy, I’ll add chili powder, hot sauce, crushed red pepper flakes, or diced jalapenos to the meat mixture.
- Add tasty toppings. Upgrade your sandwiches with crunchy dill pickles, a melty slice of cheese like American, or crisp coleslaw.
- Crockpot method. For hands-free cooking, let the slow cooker do the work! Brown the beef, then add it to the crockpot with all the ingredients. Cook on LOW for 4-6 hours or HIGH for 2-3 hours.

What to Serve with Sloppy Joes
Looking for the ideal Sloppy Joes side? Whether you’re craving crunchy, creamy, or comforting, here are some of my favorite pairings:
- Potato chips. The light, crunchy, salty bite adds a wonderful contrast to the hearty, savory meat.
- Creamy macaroni salad. Macaroni salad or even a mayo-based potato salad pair perfectly! The creamy factor is a wonderful contrast to the smokiness of the meat.
- Corn on the cob. Break out the bib and grab some napkins! The sweet and buttery corn contrasts the richness of the meat, making every bite more satisfying.
- Onion rings. They’re sweet, savory, and crunchy, all at the same time! Perfect for pairing with your sandwich.
- Baked beans. An iconic Sloppy Joe side dish! Season the beans with brown sugar and bacon bits, and they’re ready.
- Mashed potatoes. With creamy, buttery mashed potatoes, there’s no need for a bun. Same for baked potatoes! Simply scoop the saucy meat mixture on top and dig in.
How to Store
This Sloppy Joe recipe makes fantastic leftovers! You can repurpose them into a grilled cheese, loaded fries, stuffed peppers, or a bowl. Or, enjoy another meaty sandwich.
If you have leftover buns, be sure to store them separately–no one wants sad, soggy bread! Then, assemble the sandwich right before serving.
As for that deliciously saucy meat, the flavors get better over time. Simply follow these tips for storing and reheating:
To Store: Let the leftover meat sauce cool, then transfer to an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to 3-4 days. Store the buns in their original packaging at room temperature.
To Freeze: Place the cooled leftover meat sauce and buns in separate airtight freezer-safe containers. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
To Reheat: Slowly reheat leftovers in a saucepan on low heat. Add water or broth to loosen up the meat if needed. For individual servings, microwave in 30-second intervals until warmed thoroughly.

This turned out so good and everyone loved them. This is definitely a keeper!
I can’t wait to try this for my pepperoni pizza loving daughter!! I’m sure she will love it.. Thanks ❤️
I used to live on the parade route and parade night I alwsys had a houseful. I always made Sloppy Joe’s and my friends brought the sides. I wish I’d had this recipe back then. Adding the barbecue and worshestire sauce elevated the flavor of the sloppy Joe’s. The only addition I make is some shredded cheddar cheese on the hot sandwhich. It melts and is delicious!!
I frist got this recipe from my Mother. Her receipt called for items which make a BBQ; sugar, powdered mustard, vinegar, ketchup. I use this in my sloppy Joe’s and other receipts that call for BBQ.
I absolutely love making this my family scarfs it up and theres never any leftovers…the only tweak that I have done is cut mustard in half as well as ketchup….no more canned mix ever
Sloppy Joe’s were a staple in our family growing up! We would usually have the sloppy Joe’s with sweet potato fries and a salad. This recipe is versatile because the sauce and spices flavor everything and I have even added chopped zucchini and lentils to this dish!! delicious!
My family loved these sloppy joes, recipe! I will make this again and again! I put cheese on some of them, and they love them too.
I make everything from scratch and this is no exception. I can honestly say I’ve never bought the stuff in the can!!
My family just loved this. Will definitely make it again. So much better than what you get from a can.
This sloppy Joe recipe is wonderful! I always make a double patch so there is some left over for lunches. The best thing us you can easily adjust the recipe for your families preferences.
My mom makes hers almost like these. She doesn’t add the peppers or BBQ sauce though. I don’t care for mine on a bun I just add cheese to mine and eat without a bun.
my three boys loved this! my secret ingredient was a dash of cloves, and it made mine special from all the other moms!
Hi Helen! What a great tip! I’m going to have to try the cloves next time 🙂
this recipe is almost exactly like mine. only difference I don’t put in bbq sauce and green pepper.i got the recipe I use in my “teen cookbook”
when I was 12. I am now 69!! we always had lays potato chips and carrot sticks. sometimes my brother and I would put mayo on, pickles and cheese.i still love these and still make them. everyone in my family is gone but I make them for my friends and now the love them too
Thanks Diane! Sloppy Joes always give me so much nostalgia. Such a classic comfort food.
Thank you for this and all your other recipes. This one brings back memories of when my Grandmother would come visit for the summers back in the early 1970s. I watched her and wrote down everything she added to these sandwiches. When I moved out on my own I started cooking these and then adjusting ingredients. First I dropped the bell peppers and included a can of Rotel Tomatoes and green chiles and the next time I added shredded cheddar cheese and it seemed to hold the small pieces of meat together less sloppy but still sloppy enough to need several napkins. Here is a good tip if you have to use sliced bread because you do not have buns, spread mayonnaise on each slice of bread. I found this helps to keep the juices from soaking through. I think Grandmom would approve.
Hi David! Thanks so much for sharing your story! This made my day 🙂 LOVE the tip about the mayonnaise. I’m going to have to try that!
Very good taste & the kids loved it.
This was my dearly departed Morhers Signiture Dishes. Family Reunions Mom would make a big crockpot of Homemade Sloppy Joes. She was famous for her “Homemade Sloppy Joes”. The BEST!
Excellent, Tasty, Not too many ingredients, easy to make. Our sons, grandkids & I all loved Sloppy Joe sandwich with potato chips.
When I was a teen I spent the night with a friend and her dad made us sloppy joes that had everything this recipe has. I did not like it because it had onions & green peppers and didn’t taste like the canned one.. Now that I’m older I use this recipe and love it!!
Love Sloppy Joes. Try this with ground chicken to lessen fats, chicken replaces beef pretty good. Also try it with Maple Syrup instead of Brown Sugar.
I have a family of 4 that are all picky eaters. So when I find a recipe that everyone loves i tend to stick to that meal so we have leftovers. As I have MS & IT’S hard for me to stand for long periods of time.
