Have you ever had an air fryer baked sweet potato? You’re in for a treat!
Using the air fryer is faster than the oven. Plus, cleanup is a total breeze, and they come out perfectly every time.
Air fryer baked sweet potatoes are insanely delicious. They have tasty, crisp skins and fluffy, tender insides.
Serve them with these air fryer frozen meatballs, and you’ve got one helluva tasty family feast!
And they couldn’t be easier to make!
Why You’ll Love Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes
Here are just a few reasons you’ll love these:
- They go with anything. Baked sweet potatoes can be sweet or savory, a side item, or the main course. They’re the most versatile recipe! You can top them with anything and serve them with anything. It doesn’t get much better than that!
- They’re convenient. You don’t have to turn on the oven or use any aluminum foil or baking sheets. They cook more quickly in the air fryer, and cleanup is minimal.
- They taste amazing. Seriously, they’re mouth-wateringly delicious. Their texture is perfect. It’s fluffy and creamy with crisp skins.
Ingredients
Besides your air fryer, you only need three things to make these potatoes:
- Sweet potatoes – Select medium-sized firm potatoes whose skins aren’t overly wrinkly. Any variety is fine, but my favorites are the Jewel sweet potatoes. They’re the perfect size and hold their shape well.
- Olive oil – Rubbing the potatoes’ skins with olive oil will help them crisp up nicely as they cook. Any brand is fine.
- Sea salt – A little salt makes most everything taste better.
How to Make Air Fryer Baked Sweet Potatoes
The steps for making air fryer baked sweet potatoes are wonderfully simple.
1. Get ready. Preheat the air fryer (390 degrees) and wash, dry, and prepare the potatoes. Once they’re dry, use a fork to poke 10-12 sets of holes all over them. Then, coat them in olive oil and sprinkle them with salt.
2. Cook the potatoes. Place the potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook them for 30 to 35 minutes, flipping them once halfway through.
3. Cool and enjoy! Remove the potatoes from the air fryer and let them cool. Once they’re cool enough to touch, slice them open and add your toppings. Enjoy!
How Long to Air Fry Sweet Potatoes
Generally, it takes between 30 and 40 minutes to air fry sweet potatoes. That’s assuming you cook two medium-sized potatoes at 390 degrees Fahrenheit.
That’s about half the time it would take to cook them in the oven. See why I love my air fryer so much?!
Tips for Success
Let’s check out a few of my favorite success tips for baked sweet potatoes:
- Dry them out. If you leave water on them, the skins won’t get as crispy as they should. Take the time to dry them thoroughly and carefully to avoid that issue.
- Don’t overcrowd them! Two potatoes shouldn’t be problematic. (Unless you have a super small air fryer.) Still, it’s better to cook in batches if necessary. Overcrowding makes it nearly impossible for the potatoes to cook evenly.
- Skip the foil. When baking potatoes in the oven, we often wrap them in foil. You don’t have to do that in the air fryer. They’ll cook just fine – actually, even better! – without it.
- Want crispier skins? Wait until the last few (3 to 5) minutes of cooking. Then, increase the air fryer’s temperature to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Pick your potatoes wisely. Try to find two potatoes of roughly the same size and shape. They’ll cook more evenly if they’re similar.
- Keep a watchful eye. Keep a close eye on them as they cook. Otherwise, they may burn. Remember, the cooking times listed here use my air fryer as a guide. Yours may be different. Once you cook them the first time, you’ll know exactly how long it takes for the following occasions.
Topping Ideas
Loading baked sweet potatoes with toppings is half the fun of eating them! Whether sweet or savory, there are so many options from which to choose! Try any of these:
Sweet toppings:
- Butter, brown butter, honey butter, or vegan butter
- Brown sugar and/or cinnamon
- Coconut flakes or coconut sugar
- Caramel sauce
Savory toppings:
- Chives, green onions, or shallots
- Salt and pepper
- Shredded cheese, melted cheese, queso, or cheese sauce
- Bacon or diced ham
- Salsa or salsa verde
- Fresh herbs or seasonings from the spice rack
- Sour cream, yogurt, or vegan yogurt
- Chili
- Veggies (black beans, corn, peppers, etc.)
How to Store
Keep these storage tips in mind when dealing with leftovers:
- To store: Transfer the cooled potatoes to an air-tight container. Refrigerate them for up to 7 days.
- To Freeze: Wrap individual potatoes in aluminum foil and place them in an air-tight container. Freeze them for up to 3 months. Let them thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating them.
- To Reheat: Place the potatoes on a baking sheet in the oven. Heat them at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until they’re warm. You can also microwave them, but it’ll negatively affect the texture.

I see no difference in this cooking method compared to the oven. I nuke my sweet potatoes 3 min, then flip for 1-1 1/2 min.
Perfect every time.
