Why You’ll Love These Valentine’s Day Brownies

Fantastically Fudgy: These brownies achieve a perfectly fudgy consistency you'll dream about for weeks.

Totally Foolproof: Even if you’re not a seasoned baker, this recipe has your back. With common pantry staples and simple instructions, it’s nearly impossible to mess up.

Festive & Customizable: These are perfect for Valentine’s Day, but you can easily adapt them for any occasion. Switch up the sprinkles for M&M, and use different colors for different holidays.

Ingredients

  • Unsalted Butter: Forms the rich base of these brownies and helps create that perfect fudgy texture.
  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate: The key to creating a deep chocolate flavor. It also contributes to the brownies’ dense, fudgy texture. Use chips or chopped chocolate bars.
  • Granulated Sugar: Sweetens and moisturizes the brownies and creates their signature crackly top.
  • Large Eggs: The binding agent that adds richness and structure. They also create that perfect balance between fudgy and cakey textures.
  • Vanilla Extract: Enhances the chocolate flavor and adds depth to the overall taste profile. Stick to pure vanilla extract for the richest flavor.
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: Provides intense chocolate flavor without adding extra sweetness or moisture. It’s crucial for that deep, rich chocolate color and taste.
  • All-Purpose Flour: For structure and the perfect brownie texture.
  • Salt: A simple flavor enhancer. Remember, a little goes a long way.
  • Sweet Glaze: A quick blend of powdered sugar and milk to drizzle over the top. It's optional, but it helps the sprinkles stick.
  • Festive Sprinkles: Red or pink heart-shaped sprinkles make these totally adorable.

How to Make Valentine’s Day Brownies

It's never a bad time for brownies. But Valentine's Day is one of my favorite times to enjoy them.

Something about that fudgy texture and rich chocolate taste just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

This recipe is similar to other homemade brownie recipes you’ve likely tried. It has several steps, but they’re easy to follow.

1. PREHEAT the oven to 350°F. Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment, leaving an overhang.

2. MELT the butter and half of the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second bursts, stirring until smooth.

3. WHISK in the sugar until combined. MIX in the eggs, one at a time, then the vanilla.

4. SIFT the cocoa, flour, and salt over the mixture, stir until halfway combined, then FOLD in the remaining chocolate.

5. POUR the batter into the pan and spread evenly. Bake for 25–30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.

6. COOL completely in the pan, then lift out using the parchment overhang. CUT into squares or hearts.

7. MIX the powdered sugar and milk in a small bowl until thick but pourable.

8. DRIZZLE over the brownies and top with sprinkles. Enjoy!

Tips for the Best Valentine’s Day Brownies

The number one thing to remember about these brownies is to just have fun! Garnish and decorate them however you like, letting your creativity shine.

Here are a few other things to remember:

  • Use room-temperature ingredients. Set the eggs and butter out early. If they’re at room temperature, they’ll incorporate more evenly into the batter.
  • Don’t overmix. Stir the batter just until the ingredients are combined. (Especially when mixing the wet and dry together.) Overmixing can lead to tough, cakey brownies instead of fudgy ones.
  • Sift the dry ingredients. Always sift the cocoa powder, flour, and other dry ingredients to remove lumps. Doing so will ensure a smooth, even texture.
  • Slightly underbake the brownies. It’s better to slightly underbake than overbake. Underbaked brownies will continue baking for several minutes after leaving the oven. So check them early!
  • Cooling is crucial. Let the brownies cool completely before cutting – especially if you're cutting them into hearts. If they're warm, the cuts won't be neat.
  • Have fun experimenting! Consider adding a teaspoon of instant coffee powder to enhance the chocolate flavor or experiment with different types of chocolate.
  • Customize the toppings. Instead of glaze, try a drizzle of melted chocolate or caramel.

How to Store

Don’t be surprised if you don’t have any leftovers – these brownies are that good!

For maximum freshness, keep the brownies uncut. Wrap them tightly with plastic wrap, then a layer of aluminum foil. Then, store using one of the methods below.

To Store: Place completely cooled brownies in an airtight container. Add a slice of bread to maintain moisture. If already cut, separate layers with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Store at room temperature for 2-4 days or in the fridge for up to a week.

To Freeze: Wrap cooled brownies tightly in a double layer of plastic wrap. Then, wrap them again in a layer of aluminum foil. Place wrapped brownies in a freezer-safe bag or container, and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature for several hours before serving.

These rich and fudgy Valentine's Day brownies are topped with a sweet glaze and festive sprinkles. They're perfect for sharing with someone special.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter

  • 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, divided (chips or chopped bars)

  • 2 cups granulated sugar

  • 3 large eggs

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 1 cup (85g) unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2 cups powdered sugar

  • 2-3 tablespoons milk

  • 1/4 cup heart-shaped/Valentine sprinkles

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter and half of the chocolate in 30-second intervals. Stir well between each interval until smooth.
  • Add the sugar and whisk well until combined. Mix in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla.
  • Sift the cocoa powder, flour, and salt over the mixture, then stir gently until about halfway combined. Add the remaining chocolate and fold just until combined.
  • Pour the batter into the baking dish and spread evenly. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  • Remove the brownies from the oven and let cool completely in the pan. Once cooled, lift out using the parchment paper overhang. Cut the brownies into squares or heart shapes, as desired.
  • In a small bowl, mix the powdered sugar and the milk, a little at a time, until it reaches a thick but pourable consistency.
  • Drizzle the glaze over the brownies and finish with festive sprinkles. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Set the eggs and butter out early to warm to room temperature for easy mixing.
  • Whisk and stir everything by hand to avoid overmixing. Use a whisk for the wet ingredients and a spatula for the dry.
  • It’s okay to slightly underbake the brownies. Check them after 25 minutes,
  • Cool completely (or freeze for 15 minutes) before cutting for cleaner cuts.
