Why You’ll Love This Funfetti Cake Dip

Quick and Easy: This dessert dip recipe is ready for the fridge in just a few minutes. And it only needs 15-30 minutes to chill, making it perfect for last-minute gatherings or spontaneous dessert cravings.

Party Crowd-Pleaser: Also known as Dunkaroo Dip, this colorful, sprinkle-loaded treat is sure to be a hit at any celebration. It’s sweet, simple, and delicious with a bunch of yummy dippers.

Customizable Flavors: Yes, you can make this with other cake mix flavors! Just add some sprinkles, and it’ll still have that funfetti flair.

Ingredients

  • Funfetti Cake Mix: For that signature birthday cake flavor and colorful specks of joy in every bite.
  • Cream Cheese: Rich, smooth, and slightly tangy, cream cheese is the creamy base that binds all the ingredients together.
  • Whipped Topping: Fluffy whipped topping, like Cool Whip, lightens up the dip and gives it an airy, cloud-like finish.
  • Milk: A splash of milk helps thin out the dip to just the right consistency.
  • Vanilla Extract: Pure vanilla extract lends a sweet, fragrant flavor that enhances the cake mix. A little goes a long way in rounding out the overall taste.
  • Rainbow Sprinkles, For Garnish: The final festive touch, a generous sprinkle of rainbow jimmies adds pops of color and a pleasant crunch to every dunked cookie or pretzel.

How to Heat Treat Cake Mix

Some brands are safe to eat raw and will say as much on the box.

But if you don’t see it, you should heat treat cake mix when not baking it because raw flour can contain harmful bacteria like E. coli.

Heat treating the mix ensures it reaches a safe temperature to kill any bacteria, making it safe to consume in raw recipes, like dips or no-bake desserts.

Here’s how it’s done:

1. Spread the cake mix on a baking sheet as evenly as possible.

2. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 5 minutes, stirring once, until it reaches 165°F (74°C).

3. Or microwave it in a microwave-safe bowl, stirring every 30 seconds until it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).

4. Let it cool completely before adding it to the dip.

  • Thaw the Cool Whip. Make sure the whipped topping is completely thawed before adding it to the cream cheese for the fluffiest texture.
  • Adjust the milk gradually. Start with 1/3 cup milk and add more, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it reaches the desired consistency.
  • Mix on low speed. When adding the dry cake mix, keep the mixer on low to avoid creating a mess and to ensure the mix gets fully incorporated without lumps.
  • Add more sprinkles. Make and chill the dip, then gently stir more sprinkles into the dip. This makes it more colorful and keeps the color from bleeding while it chills.
  • Garnish generously. Top the dip with plenty of colorful rainbow sprinkles before just serving for the most festive presentation.
  • Variations. Try using different cake mix flavors like red velvet, chocolate, lemon, strawberry, or spice cake. You can also fold in mini chocolate chips or chopped nuts.
  • Serving suggestions. Provide a variety of dippers such as graham crackers, animal crackers, vanilla wafers, pretzels, apple slices, and strawberries. Display them around the bowl of dip on a large platter or board.

How to Store

The longer this sits, the more the color from the sprinkle will bleed. So I usually make it last minute.

But if you have leftovers, they’ll still taste great after a few days in the fridge!

To Store: Place the funfetti cake dip in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to one week. Stir gently before serving to ensure a smooth consistency.

To Freeze: I don’t recommend freezing this dip as it can alter the texture and consistency. If you must freeze, store in a ziplock bag with the air removed for up to one month, and thaw in the refrigerator overnight and stir well before serving.

After storing, add some extra sprinkles to brighten the dip before serving.

This easy funfetti cake dip tastes just like birthday cake, no baking required! It’s rich and lusciously creamy, perfect for your next birthday party.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened

  • 8 ounces whipped topping, thawed

  • 1/3 cups milk

  • 1 (15.25 ounce) box Funfetti cake mix (see notes)

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

  • rainbow sprinkles, for garnish

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes. Scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl as needed.
  • Add the thawed whipped topping and beat until well combined and fluffy. Mix in 1/3 cup of milk and the vanilla extract until incorporated.
  • With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the dry Funfetti cake mix, beating until no lumps remain. If the dip seems too thick, mix in a little more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it reaches the desired consistency. The dip should be thick but scoopable.
  • Transfer the dip to a serving bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to let it firm up slightly.
  • Garnish generously with rainbow sprinkles on top. Serve with graham crackers, animal crackers, vanilla wafers, pretzels, or fresh fruit for dipping.

Notes

  • Consuming raw cake mix can be hazardous due to the presence of raw flour, which may harbor harmful bacteria. See the post for information on heat-treating.
