If you need a quick side for any meal, you can’t go wrong with air fryer Texas toast.
It’s thick and flavorful, with crisp edges and a soft, buttery center.
There’s nothing like the crunch you get from biting into properly cooked Texas toast. I can almost hear it now.
But who wants to wrestle with the oven to make toast?
Luckily, air fryer Texas toast eliminates the stove. It’s also quick and easy, taking as little as 5 minutes.
Start with fresh toast, frozen toast, or frozen cheese toast! The air fryer can handle them all.
How to Make Air Fryer Texas Toast
How you air-fry your Texas toast depends on what type of toast you have. Still, the first two steps are the same no matter what:
1. Preheat. Preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees.
2. Transfer the bread to the air fryer. Lay the slices in a single layer, ensuring they don’t overlap.
3. Cook the toast. Here’s where things get a little different. See the following list for tips on cooking different types of toast:
- Fresh toast. Cook it for approximately 5 minutes, flipping once halfway through.
- Frozen toast. Cook it for 8-10 minutes, flipping once halfway through.
- Frozen cheese toast. Cook it for a total of 7-10 minutes WITHOUT flipping.
4. Serve. Enjoy!
Recipe Tips
Want a few more tips and tricks to ensure your Texas toast is the best it can be? Here you go!
- Heat it up. It’s typically best to preheat your air fryer before cooking most things. Food cooks more evenly when added to an already hot basket.
- Flip with care! Remember to flip fresh and frozen Texas toast slices halfway through cooking. Don’t flip cheese toasts, though. If you do, your cheese will likely end up on the bottom of the air fryer instead of the toast.
- To spray or not to spray? You’ll only need to use cooking spray (or oil) for fresh Texas toast. The frozen ones shouldn’t stick. Depending on how much butter you add to the fresh toast, it may not need extra spray or oil, either.
- Don’t mess with frozen toast. Cook it straight from frozen. It’ll do just fine.
- Give it some space. Air fryers rely on air circulation to cook food. The air won’t circulate correctly if you overcrowd the basket or overlap the toast. Keep slices in a single layer, preferably not touching if possible. Cook in batches if necessary.
- Does your air fryer have racks? If so, rotate the racks midway through the cooking process. Doing so will ensure all slices cook evenly.
What to Serve with Air Fryer Texas Toast
Honestly, air fryer Texas toast goes with pretty much anything. It even tastes phenomenal by itself.
Still, here are a few excellent pairing choices if you’re low on ideas:
- Pasta. You can never go wrong pairing Texas toast and pasta. Try it with spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, or fettuccine Alfredo.
- Red meat. I love using thick slices of Texas toast to sop up the juices from steak, pork chops, and my other favorite proteins.
- Soups & stews. Bread and soup go together like peanut butter and jelly. Try it with old-fashioned chicken noodle soup or something more exotic.
- Breakfast foods. Texas toast makes excellent toast. It’s right there in the name, after all. Pair it with bacon, eggs, grits, or an omelet.
- Seafood. You may think Texas toast is an odd choice for seafood, but hear me out. Texas toast is thick and can soak up a lot of juice. Just imagine dipping it into your gumbo or jambalaya. It would also pair nicely with shrimp, crab cakes, or salmon.
How to Store
You shouldn’t freeze leftover Texas toast. You can store it, though!
- To Store: Let the toast cool fully. Then, transfer it to an air-tight container or Ziploc bag with the air pressed out. Store it in the fridge for 2 to 3 days.
- To Reheat: The best way to reheat leftover Texas toast is, you guessed it, in the air fryer. Set it to 350 degrees and reheat for just a couple of minutes. Monitor it closely to prevent burning.
