Are you hosting a Halloween party, looking for a creative dinner idea, or just want to add some spooky charm to your meal?

These mummy hot dogs are sure to be a hit! They’re simple to make, delicious to eat, and totally Instagram-worthy.

Here’s how it’s done:

1. PREHEAT the oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.

2. OPEN the can of crescent roll dough, unroll it, and pinch the seams together. Then, cut it into strips about 1/4 inch wide.

3. WRAP the hot dogs in the strip of dough. Crisscross the dough for a more mummy-like effect, then arrange them on the baking sheet.

4. BRUSH the mummies with egg wash and bake for 12-15 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and fully cooked.

Tips For the Best Mummy Hot Dogs

Once you try these mummy hot dogs, you’ll be making them every spooky season.

They’re a total crowd-pleaser and a great way to add some playfulness to your plate.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Dough preparation. Ensure the crescent roll dough is cold, and don’t forget to pinch the seams. If it’s too warm, the strips won’t hold their shape.
  • Wrapping tips. I think these look best with crisscrossing strips of dough and the hot dogs peeking out. But feel free to fully cover them – just be sure to leave space for the eyes.
  • Egg wash. This is optional, but it adds a nice golden finish.
  • Hot dog options. Many hot dogs are pre-cooked, but if you swap in other types of sausage, you’ll need to precook them before wrapping and baking.
  • Baking time. Watch the mummies in the oven so they don’t burn. Every oven is different, so they might not need the whole baking time.
  • Eye options. Candy eyes are easy, or you can put some mustard in a small piping bag to create dots. Another option is to pipe white chocolate or royal icing onto a baking sheet, then top them with black dots.
  • Cheesy variation. For extra flavor, cut small strips of cheese and place them on the hot dogs before wrapping them in the dough.

How to Store

Want to make these ahead? Here’s how:

To Make Ahead: Prep the hot dogs with the dough strips, then wrap them in plastic. Refrigerate for 1-2 days before baking as instructed.

To Store: Place cooled leftovers in an airtight container. Keep them in the fridge for 2-3 days.

To Reheat: Warm leftovers at 350°F for 10-12 minutes. Alternatively, microwave for 30-45 seconds, though the pastry may lose some crispness.

Ingredients

  • 8-10 hot dogs (see note)

  • 1 (8 ounce) can refrigerated crescent roll dough

  • 1 large egg

  • 16 small candy eyeballs (or mustard/ketchup)

  • mustard and ketchup for dipping, optional

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Open the crescent roll dough can and unroll it. Press along the perforations to seal them. Then, use a pizza cutter or sharp knife to cut the dough into long, thin strips (about 1/4 inch wide).
  • Wrap the hot dogs in the strips of dough, leaving a small gap near the top to create a face for the mummy. Crisscross the dough for a more mummy-like effect.
  • Arrange the hot dogs on the baking tray with space between them. Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush the dough with the egg wash to give it a golden-brown finish once baked.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and fully cooked.
  • Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before adding the eyeballs. Serve warm with mustard, ketchup, or your favorite dipping sauce. Enjoy!

Notes

  • For extra flavor, cut small strips of cheese and place them on the hot dogs before wrapping them in the dough.
  • Use any kind of hot dog or sausage you like. You can even make minis with cocktail sausages!
  • Many hot dogs are pre-cooked, but if you swap in other types of sausage, you might need to precook them before wrapping and baking to ensure they cook fully. It will depend on their size and thickness.
