10+ Best Greek Dessert Recipes

Greece is famous for many things.

It’s the cradle of Western civilization and home to majestic temples. And it’s the birthplace of democracy and the Olympic games.

Greece has such a rich history. But these Greek desserts are why I keep going back!

Have you ever wondered about Mediterranean desserts? Then check out these delicious recipes.

1. Baklava

This sweet pastry has a unique texture. It’s flaky with a crunch and bite.

It’s made with phyllo or filo dough, which is used in various Greek pastries and dishes. The dough is as thin as tissue and is brushed with butter as you layer it.

Don’t be intimidated if it sounds intricate! You don’t need to get each layer perfect. The crunch in every bite is thanks to the chopped spiced walnuts filling.

It’s then sweetened and held together with a citrus honey syrup. The phyllo absorbs the syrup, and you end up with the magic that is baklava!

You might want to dig in right away, but you’ll need to leave it at room temperature for eight hours uncovered to prevent sogginess.

2. Revani Cake

If you want to serve something that’s sure to please even the pickiest eaters, give this a try.

The unassuming revani cake looks like a simple sponge cake, but it’s bursting with a sweet and citrus flavor.

Do not be fooled. This fluffy cake is soaked in a light simple syrup. That’s how it gets that distinct flavor.

Are you starting to see a pattern here? The Greeks love their honey, and I can’t blame them because they have some of the finest honey in the world.

3. Melopita (Greek Honey Pie)

This Greek honey pie tastes as good as it smells – and it smells like heaven.

Quite different from the pie that we are used to, this dessert doesn’t consist of a crust and filling.

You simply need to mix all ingredients and throw them in the oven to make these babies. The texture inside is similar to that of a cake.

It’s traditionally made with anthotyro cheese, but you can also use ricotta cheese.

And as the name of the dessert says, it also needs honey. The mixture of the cheese with honey hits the right spot.

4. Milopita (Greek Apple Spice Cake)

Every bite of milopita feels like a warm hug. It’s the perfect dessert for fall or any season for that matter!

Don’t the flavors of apples, cinnamon, cloves, walnuts, and raisins together just sound so comforting?

Instead of making the usual banana loaf, try out this Greek apple spice cake recipe for a change.

It’s just as easy to make, and you can be sure that no one is sick of it yet. Let’s be real; everyone’s a little tired of banana bread.

5. Yiaoutorpita Cake

If you want to know the secret to making an extra moist and fluffy cake, use yogurt instead of milk.

Yep, you heard me right!

This traditional Greek dessert is a pound cake that uses Greek yogurt to get its characteristic tenderness.

The best thing about this classic is you can keep it simple or dress it up to your heart’s content!

The recipe adds a cognac syrup, but you can also pair it with fresh fruit and cream or just dust it with powdered sugar.

6. Loukomadies (Greek donuts)

Good news! Loukomadies are easier to make than regular donuts. Just like you, my ears perk up when I hear the word “easy.”

These Greek donuts are deep-fried to golden perfection, then drizzled with syrup and chopped nuts.

They make the perfect afternoon snacks for kids and adults alike.

They’re so good; you’ll have a hard time controlling yourself.

7. Melomakarona (Greek honey cookies)

Calling all sweet tooths out there! You’ll want to check out melomakarona and try them for yourself.

These Greek honey cookies use spices and citruses, which are then dipped in syrup as soon as they get out of the oven.

Your home will smell so good once you make these. They may seem a bit harder to make than your usual go-to cookies, but the effort is worth it.

It’s not every day that we get to try traditional delicacies from another culture.

8. Kourabiethes (Greek Christmas cookies)

Kalá Christoúgenna!

Sorry, I’m just practicing how to say Merry Christmas in Greek for when I make these Greek Christmas cookies!

Kourabiethes are a holiday staple for every Greek household. They’re crunchy cookies that are garnished with a generous layer of powdered sugar.

Apparently, the more, the better, so don’t be afraid to make it snow!

9. Saint Fanourios Cake

Have you ever baked a cake as an offering to help you look for a lost item?

The Fanouropita is traditionally baked on August 27th to honor Saint Fanourios, patron saint of lost things, but please don’t wait until you lose something to bake this one!

You can also add chocolate and coffee to the original recipe.

10. Greek Orange Semolina Cake

Greek orange semolina cake is so luscious and flavorful that it only reminds me of happy days.

From the orange-flavored cake to the orange syrup, this is the ultimate pick-me-up.

The citrus notes of orange in this cake make it the perfect zesty treat.

Top it with Greek yogurt frosting, which balances the sweetness of the cake. Orange you glad you tried it?

11. Koulorakia (Greek Easter Cookies)

Koulorakia cookies are typically made during Easter, but I find that these pastries can be great on regular days as well since they’re not hard to make.

You can enjoy them for breakfast or as a filling snack. They’re not too sweet, with a slight crunch on the outside and a soft inside.

Feel free to get creative with the different braids that you can do with these cookies, as there is a lot to choose from.

12. Tsoureki (Greek Easter Bread)

Step up your bread game and try out the tsoureki, a traditional Greek Easter bread. This aromatic bread has a distinct taste that will have you making it more than once a year.

The unique flavor can be attributed to the mahleb and mastic ingredients.

Soft and chewy with every bite, your loved ones will keep on looking for this long after you make it for the first time.

13. Ergolavi (Greek Almond Cookies)

These easy-peasy Greek almond cookies only need five ingredients! You can’t go wrong with this recipe.

Your guests will never be able to guess just how quick they are to whip this up because of the complex flavor of almond with a dash of orange zest.

These cookies are simple, just right, and don’t try too hard. If you’re looking to impress, but you don’t have a lot of time on your hands, this can be your go-to recipe.
