Chocolate Chip Waffles

Last Updated on March 21, 2025

Imagine waking up to the irresistible aroma of freshly made homemade waffles. But not just any regular waffles – Chocolate Chip Waffles

These golden, crispy delights are studded with gooey, melted chocolate in every bite. They’re pure breakfast bliss.

With a simple recipe and common ingredients, they’re easy enough for anyone to make (and taste so much better than frozen waffles).

And though they’re already delicious, you can make them even more so with your favorite toppings. Personally, I love a drizzle of maple syrup or hot fudge.

Why You’ll Love These Chocolate Chip Waffles

Fun Family Favorite: It doesn’t matter if you’re making them for someone who’s eight or eighty-eight! Waffles – especially chocolate chip ones – are always a hit.

Taste & Texture Sensation: The sweet, gooey chocolate pairs wonderfully with the crisp golden waffles. The flavor is amazing, but the crunch when you bite into one is even better.

Completely Customizable: Add nuts, fruit (I love adding bananas), or different types of chocolate chips. And, of course, you can go as wild as you want with the toppings.

Chocolate Chip Waffle Ingredients - all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, buttermilk, eggs, butter, vanilla extract, and semi-sweet chocolate chips

Ingredients For This Chocolate Chip Waffle Recipe

  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips: They completely transform regular waffles into delightfully decadent breakfast treats. I spare no expense when it comes to my waffles and use the good stuff like Ghirardelli Mini Chocolate Chips.
  • All-Purpose Flour: The foundation for fluffy, golden waffles that are sturdy enough to hold all of your toppings.
  • Baking Powder & Baking Soda: Trust me on this one. Using both will give you the lightest, fluffiest waffles possible.
  • Granulated Sugar: For a little sweetness.
  • Salt & Vanilla: To enhance all the other flavors.
  • Buttermilk: We all know how delicious buttermilk pancakes are. But did you know that buttermilk is also a secret ingredient in waffles? It makes them ultra-tender.
  • Eggs: Add moisture and richness while holding the batter together.
  • Unsalted Butter: For that irresistible buttery flavor.

Tips for the Best Chocolate Chip Waffles

The moment I start cooking these homemade waffles, the amazing aroma fills my home and gets everyone excited for breakfast!

Whether you're enjoying them with a drizzle of syrup, a dollop of whipped cream, or just on their own, these chocolate chip waffles are sure to brighten your day.

Here are the best tips I have for these scrumptious chocolate chip waffles:

  • Rest the batter. Allow the waffle batter to rest for about 20-30 minutes before using. It allows the gluten and dry ingredients to absorb into the liquid which creates thicker, fluffier waffles.
  • No waffle maker? No problem! If you have a griddle pan, you can easily make griddle pan waffles. Just pour the batter into a hot griddle pan and cook for 3-5 minutes until bubbles form on the surface (just like pancakes). I sometimes make this variation when I don’t want to dig out my Belgian waffle maker!
  • Reserve a few chips. Don’t pour them all into the waffle batter. Instead, keep a few out to sprinkle on top of the batter when you pour it into the waffle maker. They’ll give each waffle a prettier appearance and an extra boost of chocolatey goodness. I mean, can you ever have too many chocolate chips?
  • Keep them warm. If you’re making a large batch, preheat the oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the waffles on an oven-safe dish or baking sheet while you’re making the others.
  • Always use non-stick cooking spray. I know, I know— the Belgian waffle maker says it's non-stick, but I found they still like to stick sometimes. Save yourself the frustration of a stuck waffle by giving the waffle maker a quick spritz with non-stick cooking spray. You’ll thank me later.

How to Serve Chocolate Chip Waffles

The keys to a delicious, decadent breakfast are toppings and picking the right sides.

Here are my favorite suggestions for each.

Suggested Toppings

How to Store

Waffles store and freeze better than most people realize. Here’s how I do it:

To Store: Place the waffles in an airtight container. Separate individual layers with parchment paper and refrigerate for up to 3 days.

To Freeze: Flash freeze the waffles until solid. Then, transfer them to a freezer bag for up to 3 months.

To Reheat: Pop leftovers in a toaster or reheat them on a baking sheet in a 350-degree oven for 5 to 10 minutes. Do not microwave.

Fluffy chocolate chip waffles with crispy edges and melty chocolate chips in every bite are a terrific family breakfast you'll crave again and again!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  • In a separate medium bowl, whisk the buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir by hand until about halfway combined. Stir in the chocolate chips until just combined. Be careful not to overmix – a few lumps are okay.
  • Let the waffle batter rest for 5-10 minutes. Preheat the waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Lightly grease the waffle iron if needed and pour over about 1/2 cup of batter (or per the waffle iron’s instructions). Cook until golden brown and crisp.
  • Transfer the cooked waffles to a plate. If making a larger batch, keep them warm on a baking sheet in a 200-degree Fahrenheit oven.
  • Serve warm with whipped cream, syrup, or extra chocolate chips. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use mini chocolate chips. While regular-sized chips will work, mini ones are better. They’ll distribute more evenly throughout the batter.
  • Fold gently. Stir the wet and dry gently by hand. A few lumps are okay.
  • Keep them crispy. Place cooked waffles on a wire rack in a 200°F oven to keep them warm while you make the rest. Avoid stacking them to prevent sogginess.
