It’s the ultimate breakfast showdown! Are you on team waffles or team pancakes?

These two delicious morning meals have many similarities: they are both super yummy and filling, have many ingredients in common, and can be paired with a range of different toppings.

It’s often hard to pick which one to have as your first meal of the day! And although these two breakfast favorites may be close cousins, there are some key differences between waffles and pancakes – including their flavor, texture, and how they’re prepared. 

To end the debate once and for all, we’re going to do a deep-dive comparison on each and find out what makes them truly unique!

Ingredients

Waffles and pancakes are usually made with the same ingredients: eggs, butter, sugar, and leavening agents. The difference is in how much of each of these ingredients are used.

Some pancake batter will have more eggs or egg whites. Waffles, on the other hand, will have more butter or baking powder and will contain a higher percentage of sugar to allow it to caramelize as it’s cooked.

As for caloric content, waffles tend to contain more fat and cholesterol, but because pancakes are served in higher stacks, that might even things out!

The good news is both can be made with healthier ingredient substitutes like almond flour instead of all-purpose flour. You can also try it with coconut sugar!

Add in your own little twist to both waffle and pancake batter like bacon bits, chocolate chips, or even cheese.

There may be some slight differences in ingredient portions but you can actually make pancakes and waffles with the same batter. The difference will be in how it is prepared!

Cooking Style

For waffles, you’ll need a waffle iron, which can be a con if you don’t want to get extra kitchen equipment. You’ll also need to take note of how much batter goes into the waffle iron so you don’t end up with batter all over your counter!

However, the shape of waffles is actually what gives it its distinct sweetness and crunch. So if you’re into texture, this investment is well worth it.

There are several kinds you can get depending on what kind of waffle you want. Belgian waffles tend to be thicker and wider than American waffles.

Flavor and Texture

Which One is Better?

The question of preference will ultimately be up to you! If you want something soft and fluffy, go with pancakes. If you want some crunch with a bit more sweetness, waffles are the way to go.

If calorie count is important to you, note that most waffle recipes will have more fat and cholesterol than pancakes.

When choosing between waffles and pancakes, be sure to consider what toppings you want to add.

For crunchy ingredients like nuts, oats, or granola; pancakes make a perfect pair because they balance out the texture.

Top your pancakes with syrup, strawberries, blueberries, or even yogurt for a refreshing twist. For a change in texture, crispy bacon is another topping that never disappoints.

As for waffle toppings, some sweet treats you can add include jam, chocolate syrup for belgian waffles, sliced bananas and peanut butter, fried apples, or even ice cream!

Of course, fried chicken is another classic combo that’s hard to resist. But you can also pair the sweet crunch of waffles with ingredients like cream cheese, cherry tomatoes, or sour cream for the sweet and salty combo.
