This copycat recipe manages to recreate the same flavor combinations, but at a much cheaper cost.

It’s not only excellent with steaks, but with basically any other grilled meat, too!

Here’s a fun fact about Heinz: the number 57 was used back in the 1800s and referred to the company’s 57 different varieties of sauces.

But even though it has since expanded to over 5,700 varieties, it decided to keep its original slogan.

Also, while Heinz is primarily popular for its tomato products, did you know that its first product was actually horseradish and not ketchup?

This Heinz 57 copycat recipe is so simple, yet yields the most outstanding flavor.

There are no special or expensive ingredients required. You’ll likely find all of them in your pantry.

  • Ketchup – The base of the sauce. It adds an element of sweetness and tanginess to the sauce.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – For that fantastic umami flavor.
  • Yellow Mustard – Its distinct flavors give you tart, tangy, and slightly spicy all in one.
  • Lemon Juice – Just a bit of bright and zesty lemon juice enhances the flavors of every other ingredient in the sauce.
  • Hot Pepper Sauce – Adds a bit of a kick to the sauce. It’s optional, so feel free to leave this out if you can’t handle the heat.

Tips for the Best Sauce

  • Use ketchup with low fructose corn syrup content. Get one that’s sugar-free, if possible. The flavor will be so much better.
  • Store leftover steak sauce in a bottle or an air-tight container and refrigerate for up to one week. Be sure to cool it to room temperature before chilling.
  • For a longer lifespan, freeze the sauce in a freezer-safe bag. It will keep well for up to 6 months. This means you can make a huge batch and just pop it in the freezer! When cravings strike, thaw it overnight, and it will taste just as fresh as the day you made it.
  • Apart from steak, this sauce also tastes fantastic with grilled chicken, pork chops, and hamburgers. 
  • You can also use it as a dipping sauce for French fries, chicken wings, and onion rings. Yum!

Variations for the Sauce

  • You can customize this sauce a hundred different ways to suit your taste! The key is to add complementing or contrasting ingredients that balance the flavors well. Here are some ideas:
    • Add brown sugar and pepper flakes for a sweet and spicy sauce.
    • For more heat, you can also add hot sauce, buffalo wing sauce, or sriracha. Chipotle peppers work, too! 
    • Add brown sugar and lemon juice or apple cider vinegar for a sweet and sour sauce.
    • Love honey mustard? Just add honey and yellow or Dijon mustard to the sauce.
    • Want an earthy, herby sauce? Stir in chopped basil, cilantro, parsley!
    • Can’t get enough of garlic? Add a head of roasted garlic and blend until smooth.
    • For an Italian twist, stir in dried oregano, rosemary, garlic, and onion.
    • For a Mexican flair, mix in chili powder, cumin, coriander, and lime juice.
    • For an Asian flavor, use soy sauce instead of Worcestershire sauce. Add sesame oil and ground ginger too.
    • Like your sauce creamy? Mix in mayo or sour cream!
  • Taste the sauce along the way, especially if you’re adding other ingredients. 
  • The sauce comes together in 1 to 2 minutes, but if you have time, you can simmer it for several minutes for the flavors to marry even more. This will give the sauce a deeper, bolder flavor.

Can Steak Sauce Be Turned Into A Marinade?

It absolutely can. Give your steak a good coating of this copycat sauce and let it marinate for several hours to make the most delicious dinner!

Here’s how to turn steak sauce into a marinade: whisk two tablespoons of oil into the finished sauce. Add some minced garlic, cubed onion, ground pepper, and a bit of liquid smoke for maximum flavor.

Place your steaks in a Ziplock bag, pour the sauce in, squeeze out the excess air, and seal. Leave it for 1 to 8 hours in the fridge, and grill. The result? Pure perfection!

You can also use sesame oil instead of olive oil for a nice Asian flavor. Fresh herbs such as oregano, parsley, and cilantro add great flavors as well! For a bit of tanginess, add lime or orange juice to the marinade.

  • 1 cup ketchup

  • 1 cup + 4 teaspoons Worcestershire Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons yellow mustard

  • 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon lemon juice

  • 16 drop hot pepper sauce, optional


  • In a bowl, whisk the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, lemon juice, and hot sauce (if using) until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  • Transfer to an airtight container or glass jar with a lid and store in the fridge for 2-3 weeks. Enjoy!
