Customizable. Chocolate-covered pretzels are great, but chocolate-covered pretzels sprinkled with fun extras? Now you’re speaking my language. The flavor possibilities are as endless as the candy aisle.

Perfect for the Holidays. It’s so easy to whip up a big batch for special occasions. They also make terrific gifts. Just grab some seasonal sprinkles and get the party started.

Ingredients

The ingredient list here is short and sweet, just how I like it.

Here’s everything you’ll need for homemade chocolate-covered pretzels:

  • Pretzels: The type of pretzels you use depends on the snack you want. You can use mini pretzels for poppable treats or pretzel rods if you prefer.
  • Chocolate Chips: Since it’s all about the chocolate, reach for high-quality dark, milk, or white chocolate. It also melts better, which makes dipping easier.
  • Shortening or Coconut Oil: If using chocolate chips, a little oil goes a long way to creating a smooth, creamy consistency.
  • Optional Toppings: Here’s the fun part! Use whatever toppings you like, or an assortment of all of them! Sprinkles are a classic choice, but go nuts with sea salt, crushed candies, or chopped nuts.

How to Make Chocolate-Covered Pretzels

These chocolate-covered pretzels are a low-risk, high-reward sweet treat. Check out how quickly and easily they come together!

1. PREP. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper, and set aside.

2. MELT. Add the chocolate chips and shortening to a microwave-safe bowl. Then, nuke it for 30-second intervals, stirring between each run until smooth.

3. DIP. Submerge mini pretzels using a fork and then place them on the prepared baking sheet. For rods, dip half into the chocolate and rotate until covered on all sides.

4. SPRINKLE Before the chocolate hardens, garnish with your choice of toppings.

5. CHILL. Refrigerate the covered pretzels until the chocolate sets. Serve and enjoy!

Tips & Tricks

As easy as this recipe is, I do have a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Don’t skip the parchment paper. Melted chocolate sticks to everything. So, for easy cleanup, place coated pretzels on a parchment line sheet.
  • Use a tall glass for pretzel rods. The narrow opening makes dipping the rods much easier.
  • Avoid overheating the chocolate. Microwave for 30 seconds, then stir very well between each spin. Stop heating when most of the chocolate is melted and mix, mix, mix until smooth. The residual heat will melt the last bits.
  • Use good-quality chocolate. I said it before, but top-quality chocolate tastes and melts better. Don’t use candy wafers as they don’t have the same rich taste.
  • Work in batches. If you dip all the pretzels at once, the first few will be set before you get around to adding the sprinkles. Instead, dip a few, sprinkle, then dip a few more.
  • For gifts. Set the chocolate in the fridge, then place the pretzels in a clear gift bag with a cute ribbon.

Flavor Variations

Here’s the fun bit: flavor variations! There are so many ways to switch up the flavor of these addictive treats.

From candy, chocolate, and sprinkles, I have some fantastic suggestions. Try one, or try them all for a party platter!

  • Chocolate. Dip the pretzels in different types of chocolate. You can also drizzle contrasting chocolate over them (dark over white and vice versa).
  • Nuts. Give your favorite nuts a quick spin in the food processor, and sprinkle them on top. Use pistachios, peanuts, walnuts, or cashews. There are no wrong answers.
  • Candy. Here’s where you can take these treats over the top. Garnish with crushed candy, such as Reese’s Pieces or M&Ms.

How Long Do Chocolate Covered Pretzels Last?

The great thing about chocolate-covered pretzels is they have a very long shelf life. So, feel free to make up a big batch!

Here’s everything you need to know about storing these sweet treats.

To Store: Place chocolate covered pretzels in an airtight container with parchment between each layer. Store in a cool place for up to two weeks.

Note: It’s not recommended to store them in the fridge or the freezer. Any condensation from the chocolate will cause the pretzels to become soggy.

Chocolate-covered pretzels are the perfect marriage of sweet and salty. This recipe is short and simple, so get the whole family involved!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups mini pretzels or 24 pretzel rods

  • 12 ounces chocolate chips (or chocolate bars, chopped)

  • 1 tablespoon shortening or coconut oil (if using chocolate chips)

  • Optional toppings: 1/2 cup sprinkles or chopped nuts, 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, melted peanut butter, chocolate drizzle, etc.

Instructions

  • Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside
  • Place the chocolate chips and shortening into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each spin, until smooth.
  • Use a fork to submerge the mini pretzels into the melted chocolate. Or dip half of the pretzel rods into the chocolate and rotate so it covers all sides.
  • Carefully lift the pretzels out, one by one, and gently tap off the excess chocolate. Arrange them in a single layer on the baking sheets to cool.
  • If using sprinkles, sea salt, chopped nuts, etc., add them while the chocolate is still wet. Dip and decorate in batches to make it easier. If adding a chocolate or peanut butter drizzle, do so at the end.
  • Let the chocolate set on the counter or in the fridge. Then, serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • 3 cups of mini pretzels is about 75 pretzels, or 12 ounces.
  • Have the toppings ready! You’ll need to work quickly before the chocolate sets.
  • Short-cut method: Place the pretzels in a large bowl. Heat the chocolate as instructed,  and pour it over the pretzels Then, stir until well-coated. Transfer them to the baking sheets to cool.
