Tips for the Best Texas Toast French Dips

Here are some of my best tips for making these French dips perfect.

  • Treat yourself! Choose high-quality deli roast beef and real provolone cheese for the best flavor.
  • Go the homemade route. For a homemade version, brush thick slices of bread with a mixture of melted butter, garlic powder, and parsley, then toast in the oven until golden.
  • Keep things toasty. Keep the au jus simmering on low heat while assembling sandwiches to ensure it stays hot for dipping.
  • Be extra cheesy. Add an extra slice of provolone or Swiss cheese for a richer, gooey texture.
  • Get bubbly. After assembling the sandwiches, broil them briefly to get the cheese bubbly and slightly browned.
  • Give them a flavor boost. Sprinkle dried Italian seasoning or parsley flakes on top of the melted cheese for added flavor.
  • Have fun and experiment. Customize with caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, or horseradish for extra depth and variety.
  • Find the perfect pairing. Pair with crispy fries, a fresh salad, or coleslaw to complement the richness of the French dips.

How to Store

If you have leftover sandwiches, here’s how to keep them fresh.,

To Store: Allow the French dips to cool completely before storing. Wrap each sandwich individually or place in an air-tight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Store the au jus separately in an air-tight container in the fridge.

To Reheat: Preheat the oven to 375°F, wrap the sandwiches in foil, and heat for 10-15 minutes until warmed through. Reheat the au jus in a small saucepan over low heat or in the microwave, stirring occasionally, until hot.

These Texas Toast French Dips are so cheesy and delicious! Served open-faced with au jus for dipping, you won’t be able to resist them.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices frozen garlic Texas Toast (store-bought)

  • 1 lb deli-style roast beef, thinly sliced

  • 8 slices provolone cheese (or Swiss cheese)

  • 1 tsp dried Italian seasoning or parsley flakes (optional)

  • 1 (1 ounce) packet au jus gravy mix

  • 2 cups water (or according to package instructions)

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, whisk the au jus gravy mix with water according to the package instructions. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the au jus thickens slightly, then reduce heat to low to keep warm.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F, or follow the instructions on the frozen garlic Texas Toast packaging. Arrange the frozen garlic Texas Toast on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake according to the package instructions (usually 8-10 minutes) until the toast is golden and crispy.
  • While the toast is baking, warm the sliced roast beef in the au jus for 1-2 minutes, allowing the beef to soak up some of the flavor.
  • Once the garlic Texas Toast is toasted and golden, place a half slice of provolone cheese on each, then add a generous layer of warm roast beef. Top with the remaining cheese over the beef.
  • Return the assembled open-faced sandwiches to the oven and bake for 3-5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Optionally, sprinkle some dried Italian seasoning or parsley flakes on top of the cheese.
  • Serve the open-faced sandwiches hot with a small bowl of warm au jus on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Using frozen garlic Texas Toast eliminates the need to make your own garlic butter, saving you time while still delivering that garlicky, toasty flavor.
  • For extra flavor, consider adding caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, or a touch of horseradish.
  • If you like extra cheesy sandwiches, feel free to add an extra slice of cheese to each open-faced sandwich.
