Homemade Dunkaroo Dip (Funfetti Cake Batter Dip)

I just recreated my favorite childhood snack and am on Cloud 9 – or should I say Cloud 90s?

Seriously, this homemade Dunkaroo dip is all of my millennial dreams come true!

It’s the perfect sweet and fluffy party dip. Though I don’t know if it’ll make it there because I can’t stop eating it.

It’s great with animal crackers, Teddy Grahams, and even fruit. Still, you might need a double batch because it disappears FAST.

Why You’ll Love This Dunkaroo Dip

Easy No-Bake Recipe: You have to heat-treat the cake mix, but there’s no need to turn on the oven!

Perfect for Parties: This light and fluffy cake batter dip takes less than 10 minutes to prepare and serves a whole crowd, making it ideal as a last-minute dessert.

Versatile Dipping Options: The dip pairs well with everything from animal crackers, Teddy Grahams, and fruit to pretzels, graham crackers, and cookies!

Ingredients

  • Funfetti Cake Mix: For that signature cake batter taste. It’s the perfect colorful base for your Dunkaroo dip.
  • Cool Whip: For a creamy texture and light sweetness. It helps make the dip smooth, fluffy, and addictively dippable.
  • Vanilla Yogurt: Makes it even creamier. I don’t recommend Greek yogurt, as it’ll make the dip too thick.
  • Rainbow Sprinkles: These small, colorful candy pieces add festive flair and a slight crunch. Add them just before serving so the color doesn’t bleed.

How to Make Dunkaroo Dip

Dunkaroo dip is basically cake batter meets fluffy clouds, and I can’t stop dipping everything in sight.

The first time I made it, my kitchen counter was covered in animal crackers, teddy grahams, and strawberries (you know, for balance).

Then, I made it for my friend’s birthday party, and let’s just say there wasn’t a single spoonful left.

Here’s how to make it:

1. MICROWAVE the cake mix in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each, until it reaches 165°F (74°C).

2. TRANSFER the cake mix to a parchment-lined baking sheet, spreading it into a thin layer. Leave to cool fully.

3. MIX the Cool Whip and vanilla yogurt in a large bowl until smooth.

4. ADD the cooled cake mix and stir until well combined.

5. COVER and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

6. STIR in 1/3 cup of sprinkles just before serving, mixing them into the dip.

7. GARNISH with the remaining sprinkles and serve with a variety of dippers. Enjoy!

Tips for the Best Dunkaroo Dip

I love recipes like this because they require practically no effort and still come out delicious.

And because it’s so simple, you may not need these tips, but you know I love to include a few.

  • Always heat-treat! Raw flour can contain harmful bacteria, so don’t skip the heat treatment. It’s an easy way to prevent potential foodborne illnesses.
  • Let the Cool Whip thaw overnight. Pop it in the fridge the night before so it’s completely thawed and easy to work with. If it’s still frozen or partially frozen, the consistency won’t be right.
  • Avoid Greek yogurt. Stick to plain old vanilla yogurt if possible. Greek yogurt will make the dip too thick. Additionally, add more yogurt for a thinner dip and more cake mix if you want it thicker.
  • Want an extra-fluffy dip? Combine the ingredients using a stand or hand mixer. It’ll make it much smoother and fluffier than you can by hand.
  • Use jimmie-style sprinkles. You know, the long, thin ones. The round ones (nonpareils) are more prone to bleeding. And remember to add them just before serving.
  • Remember to chill. The dip needs at least 30 minutes in the fridge for the flavors to meld. If you want to leave it overnight, that’s fine, too!
  • Switch it up. Customize this dessert dip for holidays with festive sprinkles, try chocolate cake mix and chocolate sprinkles, or add almond extract for a slightly nutty finish.

How to Store

While you can technically freeze this dip for up to 3 months, I don’t recommend it.

The texture and consistency just aren’t as good once you thaw it out again.

Luckily, you can quickly make a new batch whenever you’re craving a little nostalgic sweetness.

To Store: Store the dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Stir before serving for a smooth consistency.

Note: If you plan to make this ahead, don’t add the sprinkles yet. Cover and chill it, then stir them in right before serving.

Notes
