Why You’ll Love This Chocolate Covered Popcorn

Quick & Easy: You get a gourmet treat in minutes with little time and effort. Hello, easy snacking!

Irresistible Treat: The combination of light, airy popcorn and rich chocolate is absolutely addictive.

Gift-Giving Gold: Wrapped in decorative packaging, this chocolate popcorn is a thoughtful homemade gift. Perfect for holidays, teacher appreciation, or birthday treats.

Creative Canvas: Doctor it up with your favorite mix-in, such as M&M’s, mini marshmallows, butterscotch chips, colorful sprinkles, or chopped nuts.

Ingredients

  • Popcorn Kernels: Use unflavored popcorn kernels. I prefer popping them on the stovetop, but you can also use the microwave if that’s more convenient.
  • Chocolate Chips: I used white and semi-sweet chocolate for the perfect creamy, rich flavor. Use all milk, dark, or white chocolate if you prefer.
  • Coconut Oil: To thin out the chocolate for easier coating and a smoother, shiny finish.

How to Make Chocolate Covered Popcorn

Add a little decadence to your day with this chocolate covered popcorn! It’s an easy treat that feels super fancy.

Sure, it’s not as simple as opening up a tin of popcorn. But the end results are SO worth the extra effort!

1. POP the kernels using your preferred method. Remove any unpopped kernels and spread it on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

2. MELT the white chocolate with 1 teaspoon coconut oil in 20-second intervals, stirring until smooth. Repeat with the semisweet chocolate.

3. DRIZZLE about half of the melted chocolate over the popcorn. Toss gently and spread flat, then drizzle the remaining chocolate on top.

4. SET at room temperature or chill for 10–15 minutes until hardened.

5. BREAK into clusters. Serve and enjoy!

Tips For the Best Chocolate Covered Popcorn

Chocolate covered popcorn is such a fun snack. I dare you to stop munching (hint: you can’t!).

It’s the perfect combo of sweet and crunchy. And, it’s surprisingly simple to prepare.

Still, I have a few tips and tricks:

  • Use freshly popped. For the best flavor and texture, pop the popcorn from scratch. The stovetop, microwave, and air-popped methods all work well.
  • Discard the duds. After popping the popcorn, remove any burnt or partially popped kernels. You don’t want to lose a tooth!
  • Quality first. Use good quality chocolate chips like Girardelli. Compound chocolate or candy melts won’t taste as good or set as well.
  • Avoid burnt chocolate. When microwaving the chocolate, never exceed 20-second intervals to prevent burning. The chocolate should be warm, not hot, when coating the popcorn.
  • Don’t skip the oil. The coconut oil is crucial for achieving the right chocolate consistency and helping it set properly.
  • Thin with oil. If the chocolate starts to seize or become too thick, add a little more coconut oil and reheat gently. This helps to restore the consistency.
  • Work in batches. For better distribution, work in batches when coating large amounts of popcorn.
  • Try variations! Add dark chocolate with sea salt, milk chocolate with crushed candy canes, or white chocolate with colorful sprinkles. You can also mix in M&Ms, crushed Oreos, toffee bits, or nuts.

How to Store

I know it’s tempting, but I don’t recommend freezing this popcorn. It won’t have that same satisfying crunch when thawed.

Although, in my experience, it won’t last that long!

To Store: Transfer leftover popcorn to an airtight container. Store at room temperature for up to 5 days.

You can refrigerate it, but know that the popcorn may lose some of its crispness.
