The Godfather cocktail is a simple two-ingredient drink with big flavor.
It blends Scotch whisky with Amaretto, so it’s robust yet lightly sweet with notes of almond and cherry.
It’s been around since the 1970s and is a favorite in Italian homes and restaurants. Even if you don’t enjoy Scotch, you’ll appreciate it.
Why Is It Called a Godfather Cocktail?
So, how did this drink get its name? Honestly, no one is 100% sure.
The reigning theory is that this drink is named after the popular 1972 film The Godfather.
The drink premiered around the same time as the movie. Plus, one of its ingredients – amaretto – is a popular Italian drink, so the connection is pretty easy to draw.
Some also insist it was The Godfather star Marlon Brando’s favorite drink. But that’s likely untrue.
Ingredients
People (including myself) refer to this cocktail as a “two-ingredient drink.”
It is, but I will still list three ingredients below. After all, the ice is important!
- Ice: Make the drink in one glass with ice. Then, pour it into a new glass with fresh ice. It’s a bit extra, but it keeps the drink cold for longer.
- Scotch Whisky: Since this is pure alcohol, be sure to get top-shelf Scotch for the best taste. I prefer the smooth taste of blended Scotch. But if single malt is more your style, go for it!
- Amaretto: Again, select a good-quality brand. I enjoy Disaronno Originale Amaretto, but whatever brand you prefer is fine. Just make sure it’s fresh.
How to Make a Godfather Cocktail
This really is a super easy cocktail. So it won’t come as a surprise to see just two steps below.
Here’s how to make the Godfather:
1. Chill the drink. Fill a glass with ice. Then, pour in the Scotch and amaretto and stir until cold.
2. Strain the drink into another glass with fresh ice. Enjoy!
Recipe Variations
Admittedly, this is one stiff drink. It’s the kind of thing you’ll enjoy if you like a Negroni or an Old Fashioned on a Friday after work.
Of course, there are a few variations you can try to make it more to your tastes. Such as:
- A Sweet Godfather. This original recipe uses a 4:1 ratio of Scotch to Amaretto. For a sweeter, nuttier drink, use a 2:1 ratio or even a 1:1 ratio instead.
- The Brooklyn Godfather. Use this same recipe, but replace the Scotch with bourbon. You’ll also want to add equal splashes of dry and sweet vermouth.
- The Godmother. Use high-quality vodka instead of Scotch whisky.
- The Goddaughter. Make the Godmother cocktail. Then, mix it with equal parts cream and Amaretto.
- The Godchild. Substitute Cognac instead of Scotch. Another version of the Godchild uses brandy.
